The Baroque composer Domenico Scarlatti left Italy for the Royal Court in Lisbon. Later in Spain he absorbed strong influences from Spanish guitar music and created a fascinating hybrid form in his harpsichord pieces.
The music was unique in the Baroque Era and recognised as the extraordinary work of a master. To echo this cultural exchange I invited a superb young Kathak trained dancer, Vidya Patel, to perform with my company and thus to help me create my own hybrid blend of movement.
An Italian in Madrid received its premiere at Sadler's Wells on 29 March 2016.
